Treatment time depends on how much your teeth need to move and the type of correction needed. Mild to moderate crowding or spacing may have a different timeline than more involved alignment issues. At your consultation, we will evaluate your teeth and create a treatment plan that gives us a better idea of your expected timeline. Patients also need to wear their aligners consistently because leaving them out too often can slow progress. During your follow-up appointments, we will monitor your teeth and let you know if treatment is on track.

Clear aligners and traditional braces can both be useful, but one is not automatically better for every patient. Clear aligners are clear and removable, which many patients like for eating, brushing, flossing, work, school, and social activities. Metal braces are fixed to the teeth and may be recommended when certain orthodontic movements or more complex corrections are needed. We look at your teeth and orthodontic needs before determining which approach may be more suitable. If clear aligners aren’t right for you, we will explain why and discuss other options or whether additional orthodontic care is needed.

We generally want patients to wear their aligners for most of the day and night, removing them mainly for eating, drinking certain beverages, brushing, and flossing. Consistent wear is key because the aligners can only apply the planned gentle pressure while they are covering your teeth. Leaving them out for long periods can affect the effectiveness of treatment and slow progress. We will provide specific wear instructions at your first appointment because individual recommendations can vary. Following those directions closely will allow your treatment to progress as planned.

Clear aligners can cause temporary discomfort, especially when you start treatment or switch to a new set of trays. Patients often describe this as mild pressure rather than the irritation they may associate with metal brackets and wires. The pressure is because the aligners are designed to gently move your teeth into their planned positions. For many patients, this discomfort decreases as the mouth adjusts to each new aligner. Not every patient is a candidate for Invisalign treatment or another clear aligner approach. Clear aligners are generally considered for adults and younger patients with mild to moderate concerns such as gapped teeth, crowded teeth, or misaligned teeth. More complex orthodontic problems may require braces, additional treatment, or care from an orthodontist depending on the patient’s needs. Although the Invisalign system is available in the US and other countries, eligibility still depends on an individual examination rather than choosing the product based on the Invisalign logo or brand name.
